Day Two: Medellin

Medellin, known locally as the “city of eternal spring”, is blessed with a mild climate and flowers in bloom year-round. Following a popular vote in 2013, the Urban Land Institute awarded Medellin the Innovative City of the Year Award. Its famous trams and outdoor escalators were deservedly praised as were the city’s world-class art galleries, libraries, and public spaces. During this tour, you will get an overview of the city’s culture, history, and architecture as you visit the most iconic sites including various parks, the Golden Mile, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Zona Norte and the botanical garden.

After a stop at Donde Dario for a typical lunch, continue to Casa de Memoria, dedicated to the victims of Colombia’s long and brutal civil conflict. This museum offers a space to the victims and their family to dignify, collect their memories, and disseminate their views on the violent cycle of town and country.

You will end your day in a local comuna to understand how it has changed direction and has become an example of the new social transformation. The construction of a public transportation system to include the metro and cable cars as well as meeting centers with libraries were the starting points for this amazing change. This comuna, built on a steep mountain slope, is only accessible by cable car. During the ascent, you will notice the government’s initiative … “techos una historia”… roofs and houses painted with huge graffiti. After having suffered the horrors of the war, the residents of the area are proud of their district. Your guide will explain this transformation and how the urban art represented has rescued hundreds of young people from an armed conflict.
